About

Gargi is the artistic name of Garima Madan, an Indian artist whose practice develops authored objects through sculpture, engineered construction and hand craftsmanship.

Over the past eighteen years, her work has spanned sculptural runway pieces, dimensional accessories, engineered surface constructions and special creative projects for international fashion houses and cultural productions. Her work has contributed to Paris Fashion Week collections, Swarovski collaborations, museum installations and large-scale performance projects, bringing together structural design, material experimentation and highly specialised making.

Her professional experience informs, but remains distinct from, her independent practice. Working across sculpture, structural design, textiles and embellishment, Gargi develops objects in which form, construction and surface evolve together rather than sequentially. Her process begins with prolonged sculptural studies that gradually resolve through repeated refinement before being translated into engineered structures using contemporary fabrication methods. Visible craftsmanship and hidden construction are treated with equal importance, allowing every element of an object to contribute to its identity.

Familiar forms become starting points for investigations into sculptural presence, material intelligence and authored construction.

Artist Statement

My practice develops authored objects through sculpture, engineered construction and hand craftsmanship.

Beginning with familiar forms, I work through prolonged cycles of sculpting, making and refinement until form, construction and surface become inseparable. Engineering and ornament are developed together rather than treated as independent disciplines.

Although many works may be worn, they are not conceived primarily as fashion accessories. I approach objects of adornment with the seriousness of sculpture and the discipline of making, allowing each object to evolve through material decisions rather than predetermined style.

The resulting works form an evolving body of sculptural objects that investigate how familiar forms can acquire renewed presence through sustained authorship.
